I put a piece of butcher paper out and asked the question: If you could only have one superpower, what would it be?
One kid wrote: "Access to the pearly gates" (with a drawing).
I thought that was pretty dang original!

7 year old hanging out with his older siblings...
Me: Hey Joseph, so when do you turn 8?
Joseph: Uh, I don't know.
Me: So how do you know when it's your birthday?
Joseph: My mom tells me.
Me: Oh, okay.

During that nighmare that is the week after school ends but before the summer reading program, I had a visit from one of my high schoolers. I knew he was graduating and that he had admission to several state schools. I worked with this teen all year long - helping him with application essays, scholarships, and homework. He gave me an invitation to his graduation as well as his class picture. Actually, he let me choose which picture I wanted from 3 poses. He thanked me for helping him out and sincerely said that he couldn't have done it without me and the library.

I gave him a big hug. How cool is that? Hoards of crazy kids in the library all week long driving the staff crazy and me pretty darn close to crazy... and then one guy who competely changes everything and reminds me of why being a YA librarian is a great job. Congratulations, Marcel!
