A 9-year old's version of the Boston Tea Party:
There were these England guys and they had these bottles of tea on their boat. Well, these other guys came chasing after them and they wanted to tip the boat over. They did and all the tea squirted out into the water. These other guys went and tested the water and they found tea still in the water right now!

a poem a student printed out at the library:
Sometimes it hurts
I am a bright black girl some people make fun of me and some say that I am as beautiful as a shiny pearl when they talk about me it makes me think does it hurt so bad that my mind sink why can’t they look at me for who I may be is it because I’m not what they want to see people should not treat others like dirt just to let yawl know sometimes it hurts

I just had a discussion with two girls (about 10 or 11 years old) - theyasked me at what age girls get their "mental" cycles. I was trying so hardnot to laugh, they were being so serious! One says, "Yeah, you have to getit by the time your 11." I really wanted to ask her what would happen ifyou didn't, but I took the adult role and explained that everyone wasdifferent. It's always something new with this job... :)
